Subject: Jeff Allan - Guest Coach

Location: North Wales
Jeff first started paddling as a cub scout, but didn’t really get into Sea Kayaking until about ten years ago, first of all setting out and exploring the local coastline of ancient Kernow (Cornwall). He quickly realised what a fantastic marine environment lay upon his doorstep and In 2003 he founded Sea Kayaking Cornwall, offering both tuition and guiding for sea paddlers around this unique South Western peninsula.

In 2004 Jeff, along with Hadas Feldman from Israel, set off to circumnavigate the four main Islands of Japan, a distance in excess of 6500 kilometers. Then in 2005 he headed south and along with Hadas, Peter Bray and Nigel Dennis made the first British circumnavigation of South Georgia, often referred to as ‘The Antarctic Oasis’.

At present, as well as running Sea Kayaking Cornwall , Jeff along with his business partner, Simon Osborne, is engaged on a three to four year project to circumnavigate Scandinavia by Sea Kayak and Ski.

Subject: Tony Hammock - Guest Coach

Location: North Wales

It was 1969. The Beatles were recording the Abbey Road LP, Neil Armstrong landed on the moon and Tony was learning to paddle a kayak on the Thames tideway. Fibre-glass was coming in, canvas was going out and we packed all our stuff in fertilizer bags. They leaked.

Nearly forty years, three kids and a career in manufacturing later, he says he is still learning. He’s been around a bit; Slalom, River Racing, River running, Surf and most of all, the Sea. Holidays, lightly disguised as expeditions, have been enjoyed in Alaska, Greenland, Canada and Norway.

After fifteen years of amateur coaching, Tony went professional in 2002 and now runs Seafreedom Kayak based near Oban. He is an aspirant level five coach and hopes to qualify before he gets his bus pass. Vertically challenged, alarmingly enthusiastic and notorious for truly awful jokes, he gets his kicks from enabling people to enjoy the wild environment that he loves.

Nick Cunliffe is a North Wales-based sea kayak coach, with plenty of experience paddling in Anglesey waters. He runs a local outdoor activity business, Surf-Lines including a programme of sea kayaking courses for all ability levels - from novice to BCU 5 Star.

With a large number of local coaches and leaders, participants can look forward to some excellent training opportunities."

Nick can be seen performing some ninja sea kayak moves in Justine Curgenven's excellent sea kayaking DVD 'This is the Sea 2 & 3

Subject: Guto Wyn - Guest Coach

Location: North Wales

Guto, born and bred on Anglesey, is a sea coach in his spare time, but spends most of his time as a teacher of maths and outdoor activities at a local secondary school.  His main coaching work involves introducing children to the sport, so the opportunity to work with keen sea paddlers is something he’s looking forward to.

He says “dwi’n edrych ymlaen at gael cwmni da i grwydro arfordir godidog Môn”

“I look forward to three days in good company exploring the glorious Ynys Môn coastline”- take the opportunity to learn a few words of Welsh with him while paddling or over a pint.

Iechyd da!

Subject: Taino Almestica - Guest Coach

Location: North Wales
Taino's introduction on the water started from a dug out canoe, which he and his uncle's would go hunt Caribbean Lobster and large Conch. Later in New York State he would get into his first open canoe with the Sea Cadets. In 2002 Taino and his daughter got into their first kayaks and were hooked ever since.

Taino is currently an instructor for New York Kayak Co. and a volunteer instructor for various clubs on the heavy traffic Hudson River. Taino says ...."Kayaking has given me a constant learning environment and a place to always work on my watermanship skills".

Along with Derrick Mayoleth, Taino took part in the first successful circumnavigation of Puerto Rico. The trip was entitled Chasing The Ana

Subject: RE: Pete Jones - Guest Coach

Location: North Wales
Peter Jones, by his own admission, has been round the block a few times and picked up many a story on the way. At one time Pete was chief kayak instructor at the Anglesey Sea & Surf Centre and continues to enjoy working life as a freelance coach in North Wales and further afield Pete has taken part on many major sea kayak expeditions, including West Coast Canada, Nova Scotia, Israel, Holland, Spain, Ireland, Outer Hebrides, St. Kilda, Orkney and Greenland (2000, 2002 and 2004) and is currently sponsored by Sea Kayaking UK

As a long standing paddler and respected coach, Pete holds true to old fashion values of adventure, exploration and enjoyment wherever you may be with your boat In June 2006 Pete along with Martin Ricard and Phil Clegg flew out to Scoresbysund via Iceland to undertake another extreme trip, and they had to rely on a certain amount of good fortune with weather and ice conditions to complete the expedition..................

..........."Exploring such a wild and remote coast under your own steam in a sea kayak, knowing you are totally dependant on your self and two mates, and being able to get to places and seen things no one else has ever seen before is beyond description. As is the coast line itself and the ice. We knew it would be wild and impressive but never realised how much so. Nor did we appreciate how insignificant we would feel in such a huge and remote world. Seeing the polar bears, close and in the wild on their terms was amazing and if nothing else was worth all the effort................"

Pete doesn't blog nor does he have a URL but if you ever get to spend time in his company whether its over a pint, on an expedition or being coached it will be a rewarding experience

Subject: RE: Richard Rogers - Guest Coach

Location: North Wales

Richard Rogers comes from south Wales (yes there is another part of Wales where kayaking takes place) and plies his trade in the calm waters of Cardiff Bay and the muddyish waters of the Severn Estuary and beyond.

He is a level 4 sea and inland coach, but seems to spend alot of time coaching one stroke, the forward one, for the aspiring sprint athletes in Cardiff. Richard also has an interest in fitness, strength, power and training for recreational paddlers as he feels that this is an underdeveloped area for many paddlers (or maybe it can be used to overcome technical problems!).

Richard says ... "Please don't ask me where I have been on crazy kayak expedition, you will be sorely disappointed"

Subject: RE: James Stevenson - Guest Coach

Location: North Wales

Yorkshire born James Stevenson first got into kayaking on white water with scouts 15 years ago. Since then James has been lucky enough to travel to many destinations around the world Sea Kayaking and Paddling Whitewater.

He now runs a North Wales based kayaking company, Adventure Elements, offering a range of Sea Kayaking courses for beginners through to advanced salty sea dogs.

James says.......“The Anglesey coastline, for me, has to be one of the top destinations in UK, if not the World, for sea paddling. Huge sea cliffs to wide sweeping sandy bays, awesome tidal races to relaxing estuaries mean that this area has something for paddlers of all abilities and is a great location for the 3rd UK Storm Gathering”.........

When not paddling James can be found repairing holes in sea kayaks and (after a few beers) playing the guitar.

Subject: RE: Roger Chandler - Guest Coach

Location: North Wales
Roger has always had an affinity with water, from those early days when mum and dad just couldn’t get him out of it. In his mid twenties he decided to pursue a career in the outdoors and this provided him with an extensive breath of experience and opportunities as an instructor and operations manager.

During this time he also gained a diploma and degree in youth work and various national governing body qualifications, such as the mountain Instructor award (MIA), Level 3 inland kayak and Level 4 coach open canoe and Level 5 coach aspirant sea.

Roger's real love and passion is for journeying on the sea and he has paddled and led groups in the Southern Ocean and Chilean Patagonia, over a three month period, the Mediterranean Sea, locations throughout the UK, West Coast Canada and above the Arctic Circle and to Norway’s Lofoten islands.

More recently he has begun Coastal Spirit with his partner Sonja; a North Wales based company which provides hill, rock, team development and sea kayaking experiences, courses and journeys. He is highly dependable, passionate, and cheerful and really enjoys peanut butter!
